Safety Philosophy
A-C strives for a Zero Incident Rate. The employees of A-C Electric Company are our most valuable asset and no phase of business is of greater importance than their personal safety. We base this conviction on the basic principal that all accidents are preventable and safety is the responsibility of every employee all of the time.
A-C Electric Company makes every effort to provide a safe work environment for all employees by providing a comprehensive safety program, including:
- Job specific safety training
- Extensive safety information
- Developing production procedures with safety as a focus
- Ensuring availability of proper tools and equipment that promote safer work practices
- Working with our Joint Training Programs to provide our employees with the highest level of safe work procedures.
A-C Electric Company’s Safety Program is managed at all levels. The Safety Administrator is responsible for Safety & Loss Control, on a full-time basis. Each Foreman has the day-to-day responsibility to ensure A-C Electric Company’s Safety Program is followed. The division Manager and Project Managers are assigned the responsibility of ensuring that all safety equipment and safe work practices are employed on each and every job and every employee is expected to assume personal responsibility for working safely.
Safety Program:
The A-C Electric Company Safety Program is designed to provide a safe work environment for all employees and to fully comply with all local, state, and federal safety requirements. The A-C safety program has a number of components including the following:
- Injury and illness prevention program
- Code of safe practices
- Written safety program
- Safety training
- Task specific training
- Safety inspections
1. Injury and Illness Prevention Program:
The elements of our Injury and Illness Prevention Program are designed to cover the requirements outlined in CCR Title 8, Section 3203, and to ensure a safe and healthy work environment for our employees. The Injury and Illness Prevention Program includes the following:
- Identification of the Safety Administrator for implementing and maintaining the program.
- A system to ensure compliance with company safety policies and procedures.
- A system for effectively communicating program elements and safety policies to all.
- Procedures for identifying and evaluating workplace hazards.
- Procedures for investigating job related illnesses and injuries.
- A system for correcting unsafe or unhealthy physical conditions, work practices, or procedures in a timely and prioritized manner.
- Provisions for employee training and instruction.
- Explanation and maintenance guidelines for the Safety and Health Record Keeping System.
2. Code of Safe Practices:
A-C Electric Company has developed and implemented safe work practices for the prevention of injuries and illnesses based on the operations of the Company. All employees are trained and expected to follow safe work practices. These safe work practices include:
- General safety requirements
- Electrical safety
- Use of personal protective equipment
- Safe lifting
- Proper material handling
- Safe use of ladders
- Scaffold use
- Operating motor vehicles
- Safe practices for hand and power tools
- Safe electrical work practices "Qualified Person"
- Fall protection
- Trench/excavation
- Hazard communication
- Good housekeeping for prevention of slips, trips and falls
3. Written Safety Program:
The A-C Electric Company Safety Program defines all safety policies and procedures employees are required to follow in order to safely perform their job functions. This written safety program complies with the regulatory requirements to establish specific procedures in the performance of the operations of A-C Electric Company.
4. Safety Training:
Employee safety training is conducted by various methods and at such time as new equipment or production methods are introduced. Training on unfamiliar or new equipment or processes is provided before employees are permitted to operate the equipment or participate in the work process.
At each job site, employees are made aware of the hazards associated with the project by the job Foreman and the Safety Administrator. In addition, the employees are provided with safe work procedures so they may protect themselves and others from incidents that may cause an injury or property damage.
All employees are expected to attend the weekly Tailgate Safety Meetings. During these meetings a safety bulletin is reviewed, which covers safety and health topics relevant to their work. Employees are encouraged to identify areas where the safety of the job can be improved. All documentation of these meetings, including attendance records are maintained with the project records and the Safety Administrator.
5. Task Specific Training:
A-C Electric Company believes well trained employees create a safer work force. Depending upon their specific job duties, our employees receive training in the following:
- Confined space
- Traffic control/flagger safety
- Powder actuated tools
- First aid/CPR
- Foreman/Supervisor responsibilities
- Scissor/boom lift operation
- Incident investigation
- Job site inspections
- Forklift operator certification
- State certified crane operators
- OSHA 10 & 30 hour
- Hazardous waste operations and emergency response
- MSHA Part 46 and 48
6. Inspections:
A-C Electric Company conducts regular job site inspections to identify, evaluate, and eliminate work place hazards. These inspections are conducted by the Foreman and the Safety Administrator. Along with the inspections, employees will conduct everyday visual checks to determine if there are hazards not previously identified and eliminated.
